For the third week of “Road to SXSW 2022”, we at Silver Linings Reviews are looking for the chuckles in this year’s film line-up. While there are several major studio comedies premiering at Austin’s landmark Paramount Theatre (The Lost City, The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent), this preview piece will highlight under-the-radar films that have great potential to trigger the ol’ funny bone.

Pretty Problems

Director: Kestrin Pantera, Screenwriters: Michael Tennant, Britt Rentschler, Charlotte Ubben, Producers: Katya Alexander, Britt Rentschler, Charlotte Ubben, Michael Tennant
Cast List: Britt Rentschler, Michael Tennant, JJ Nolan, Graham Outerbridge, Charlotte Ubben, Alex Klein, Clayton Froning, Katrina Hughes, Vanessa Chester, Amy Maghera

Synopsis: A comedy that follows a flailing couple on a getaway trip with affluent strangers: down the rabbit hole, and into the most unhinged weekend of their lives. Smash a glass, take the ride. (World Premiere)

Why We’re Excited: After her previous success at SXSW 2019 with Mother’s Little Helpers, director Kestrin Pantera looks to make audiences laugh in Austin once again with her latest feature, Pretty Problems. While Pretty Problems may not contain the immense star power of other comedies in SXSW’s 2022 line-up, its exciting premise of normal folks putting up with wealthy individuals who are detached from reality seems like ample material for outrageous humor, making this a must-watch when it premieres at the ZACH Theatre.

When to Watch:

  • Mar. 14, 11:30 am @ ZACH Theatre
  • Mar. 15, 9am @ SXSW Online
  • Mar. 16, 3:30pm @ Violet Crown Cinema (Screen 1)
  • Mar. 16, 4:00pm @ Violet Crown Cinema (Screen 3)

Seriously Red

Director: Gracie Otto, Screenwriter: Krew Boylan, Producers: Jessica Carrera, Sonia Borella, Timothy White, Robyn Kershaw
Cast List: Rose Byrne, Krew Boylan, Bobby Cannavale, Daniel Webber, Celeste Barber, Thomas Campbell

Synopsis: Raylene ‘Red’ Delaney is a vivacious but, at times, misguided redhead, who pours herself a cup of ambition and trades her nine to five career in real estate for a life under the spotlight as a Dolly Parton impersonator. (World Premiere)

Why We’re Excited: Australian filmmaker Gracie Otto potentially has a massive hit on her hands with Seriously Red, a film that humorously dives into the world of celebrity impersonators. Utilizing Dolly Parton’s iconic song catalogue and an all-star supporting cast that includes Rose Byrne (Bridesmaids, Spy) and Bobby Cannavale (Nine Perfect Strangers, Ant-Man), the careers of both Otto and her leading lady, Krew Boylan could launch into the stratosphere after the world premiere of Seriously Red.

When to Watch:

  • Mar. 13, 7:00pm @ Alamo Lamar (Screen D)
  • Mar. 14, 9:00am @ SXSW Online
  • Mar. 14, 7:00pm @ Violet Crown Cinema (Screen 1)
  • Mar. 14, 7:30pm @ Violet Crown Cinema (Screen 3)

Spin Me Round

Director/Screenwriter: Director: Jeff Baena, Screenwriters: Jeff Baena, Alison Brie, Producers: Mel Eslyn, Jeff Baena, Alison Brie, Dylan Sellers, Chris Parker
Cast List: Alison Brie, Alessandro Nivola, Aubrey Plaza, Molly Shannon, Zach Woods, Ayden Mayeri, Ben Sinclair, Tim Heidecker, Debby Ryan, Fred Armisen

Synopsis: When the manager of an Italian restaurant chain wins the opportunity to attend the franchise’s educational immersion program in Italy, what she thought would be a romantic getaway devolves into chaos and catastrophe. (World Premiere)

Why We’re Excited: After previously collaborating on the mysteriously intriguing Netflix film, Horse Girl, Alison Brie (Community, GLOW) and director Jeff Baena are moving back to their comedic roots in their latest film, Spin Me Round. Much like Seriously Red, Spin Me Round also boasts a who’s-who cast of entertaining jokesters, including (but not limited to), Fred Armisen (Portlandia), Debby Ryan (Jessie), and Aubrey Plaza (Parks and Recreation). Add in the scenic vistas of Italy and Spin Me Round sounds like a perfect light-hearted cinematic getaway.

When to Watch:

  • Mar. 13, 9am @ SXSW Online
  • Mar. 15, 4:15pm @ Alamo Lamar (Screen B)
